Vacancy notice – Legal Team Supervisor, Arabic speaking

Position: Legal Team Supervisor, Arabic speaking

Location and start date: Geneva, Switzerland; starting immediately

Reporting to: Director of the Legal Department

Job description:
With a staff of 20 based in Geneva and the Arab world and projects run in Arab countries and Europe, the Legal Team Supervisor will work closely with the Director of the Department to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the organisation’s Legal Department. Liaising regularly with country officers, contacts in the Arab World and other Geneva-based partners, the successful candidate will supervise and manage the team of legal officers based in Geneva as they prepare submissions of individual cases and reports to the UN human rights mechanisms.

Major responsibilities:
• Preparation of legal submissions to the UN human rights mechanisms (Special Procedures, Treaty Bodies)
• Supervision of Legal Department staff in the preparation of submissions to UN human rights mechanisms
• Day-to-day running of the Legal Department (meeting with outside partners, oversight of weekly Legal Department meetings, decisions on how to treat cases of individual human rights violations, etc.)
• Review and evaluation of work and staff; contribution to establishing the strategy of the organization.

Requirements
 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in human rights, ideally in the Middle East and North African region;
 5 years experience managing a team, supervising work and performing evaluations
 Advanced university degree, preferably in law, political science or international relations, or equivalent work experience; solid knowledge of international human rights mechanisms;
 Ability to produce high-quality submissions (such as to various human rights mechanisms: communications to the UN Special Procedures; individual complaints and reports to the UN Treaty Bodies);
 Able to work in any combination of Arabic, English and French;

 Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a number of different partners and contacts, including UN staff, governmental authorities, grassroots organizations, victims and their families, NGOs and the media;
 Strong ability to take rapid decisions based on regional knowledge and understanding of the politics and history of the Arab world;
 Ability to work in a small, multicultural team, and respect for diversity;
 Highly organised, able to work quickly, effectively and independently under tight deadlines with colleagues who are often located in remote locations.

 Salary commensurate with experience and responsibilities
